A recent study by the U.S. Department of Education reported:

  • Number of school districts offering community service with credit, awards, and/or guidance: 86%

  • Percentage of schools/districts that have a service requirement: 18%

  • Number of public high school students involved in service initiatives - approximately 6.2 million; number of private high school students - approximately 830,000

  • Almost 30% of college students report participating in a course where service is part of the curriculum (unpublished data from the HERI study at UCLA)
